Lobbying 101: Empowering Activists Statewide

Community organizer/legislative liaison Wes Wright.During January Legislative Liaison/Community Organizer Wes Wright joined local leaders in seven Kentucky Communities for Lobbying 101: Raising the Voice and Visibility of Fairness.

Since our founding in 1993, the Kentucky Fairness Alliance has been a leader in lobbying elected officials on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Lobbying 101 was only our latest effort to engage, empower, and mobilize fair-minded Kentuckians from all over the Commonwealth.

Participants learned about KFA's legislative priorities for the 2007 session, received Fact Sheets with talking points, and even practiced talking with legislators in a role-playing activity.

If you'd like to get a group together for Lobbying 101 in your community, please e-mail Wes!

Murray State Considering Inclusive Non-discrimination Policy

Jody Cofer, KFA Board Chair and program specialist for undergraduate research and scholarly activity at Murray State University, spoke to MSU's Staff Congress in October about the campus's need to establish an inclusive non-discrimination policy. In December, the Staff Congress voted by a 12-1 margin to recommend the change.

"I am hopeful that President Dunn and the administration will move on the recommendation," Cofer told the Murray State News.

All of Kentucky's other public universities already prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Friends & Family First Anniversary

November 2006 marked the one-year anniversary of Friends & Family. This unique program, designed to recognize financial supporters of the Kentucky Fairness Alliance, raised thousands of dollars in its first year.

More than that, Friends & Family continues to provide a way for folks to state their commitment to building a fair Kentucky. Each membership means more than its dollar amount. Each membership represents a voter who values fairness enough to invest in a movement.
