KFA Board of Directors meeting, January 20, 2007.

Rocky Lucas
Flatwoods

Born in 1981 in Ashland, KY, Rocky Lucas always felt the pull to return to his home state. Despite growing up in suburban Detroit and graduating from high school there, Ashland was always “home.” As a young adult Rocky returned to his home state to continue his education, obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Eastern Kentucky University in 2006. Since that time he has worked in the field of child protection and is currently pursuing his MSW from the University of Kentucky.

Faith is the centerpiece of Rocky’s life, and one of his primary goals as a board member is to help mend the rift between the GLBT and faith communities. Rocky knows firsthand about growing up and hearing that being gay is a “sin,” that he is going to hell, etc. However, the love of true friends, family, and of God helped him overcome this and realize that he is both gay and a man of faith, and that is what he was meant to be. Rocky hopes to be able to reach out to the religious community to help foster support and understanding, and has a special place in his heart to help gay youth who are in spiritual crisis.

Some of the goals that Rocky hopes to achieve in his hometown include opening up a new Chapter of KFA, identifying religious leaders in the area who support the cause of fairness, and mobilizing gay business leaders in the area to take a more public stand and raise awareness of GLBT issues and causes.

Ampersand. The Ampersand symbolizes the solidarity we are building through Friends & Family, and suggests the inclusiveness we are working toward. It reflects the idea that no one individual, legislator, organization, or city can carry all the water for equality. Our success lies in our solidarity.
